Your Melbourne Wedding Celebrant Questions Answered: Cost, Legals, & Unique Ceremony Options

Choosing the right wedding celebrant in Melbourne is a huge part of your wedding planning journey. You want someone who is reliable, professional, and fun, but you also need clear answers about costs, legalities, and how to make your ceremony truly yours.
To make things easy for you, I’ve rounded up the most frequently asked questions I receive here at Just In Love Weddings and Events. Whether you are planning an intimate backyard elopement or want a loved one to stand up and tell your story, here is everything you need to know.

1. How Much Does a Melbourne Celebrant Cost?

Wedding budgets can add up quickly, which is why I pride myself on offering a simplistic, transparent approach to my pricing. I offer several budget-friendly options tailored to exactly what you need:
  • Elopement Ceremonies: Start at $500.
  • Simple Packages: Start at $570.
My ceremonies offer a personal, relaxed, and highly affordable alternative to the standard Victorian Registry Office without sacrificing the significance of your big day.

2. Can We Get Married at Home or in a Park?

Absolutely! Your wedding day should happen exactly where you feel most comfortable. I love to travel and regularly perform ceremonies at a wide variety of chosen locations.
Whether you want a chic city elopement, a cozy backyard wedding, or a ceremony surrounded by nature, I travel all over Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, and greater Victoria (including the Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong Ranges, Macedon Ranges, Gippsland, and Warrnambool). I've even been known to pack my bags for overseas destinations like New Zealand!
Where will you say 'I do'? From a local cafe in Fitzroy to a scenic park or your very own living room, the choice is entirely up to you.

3. Do You Handle the Legal Paperwork?

Yes, entirely. The legal side of getting married shouldn't be a source of stress for you. When you book me as your celebrant, I manage the entire legal process from start to finish. This includes:
  • The initial lodgement of your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) (which must be done at least one month before your wedding).
  • Ensuring all legal wording is correctly spoken during the ceremony.
  • The final registration of your marriage with BDM Victoria (Births, Deaths and Marriages).
All you have to do is show up, sign on the dotted line, and enjoy the moment.

4. What is the ‘Married by a Friend’ Ceremony Option?

This is an incredibly popular choice for modern couples who want the ultimate personal touch. Also known as the "Friendly I Do" package, it gives you the best of both worlds.
If you have a close friend or family member who knows your love story inside and out, they can lead the storytelling, share inside jokes, and run the main flow of the ceremony. Because they aren't a registered celebrant, I will step up to handle all the mandatory legal wording and paperwork to ensure your marriage is 100% valid under Australian law. It’s a wonderful, emotional way to involve your favorite person in your wedding.

5. Is an Elopement Ceremony the Same as a Registry Office Wedding?

Legally speaking, yes—the paperwork and the end result are identical. However, the actual experience is completely different.
Unlike a standard, rigid slot at the Registry Office, a registry-style elopement with me is entirely on your terms.
  • Flexibility: You choose the date, time, and location (a park, a cafe, or your home).
  • Privacy: You aren't sharing a waiting room with dozens of other couples.
  • Affordability: You get a tailored, private experience at a similar or even lower price point than the courthouse.

Ready to Lock in Your Date?

Planning your ceremony should be an exciting, easy breeze. If you’re looking for a fun, professional, and reliable sole trader to help you navigate your Victorian wedding, I would love to chat.
